I applied for the Student of Applied Technology scholarship as my advisor told me to do. He told me to write a 100 to 300 word essay as to how the scholarship would benefit me, so here’s what I wrote:
“I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up and was only interested in impractical careers, so I found myself in retail management for over 15 years. The retail environment does not provide the work-life balance to lead a happy and healthy lifestyle. I went to work for ——————- as a machine operator two years ago and realized that I was good at it and that I really enjoy what I do, but I am not reaching my full potential by staying in the operator position. I have been working towards becoming a line mechanic and have already become a back-up mechanic. I have always wanted to go back to school and I’ve finally found something that I have a passion for that I can make a good career out of.
I have a son who has autism and has a hard time focusing on his schoolwork, and as I was applying for college and doing my orientation, he asked me what I was doing and told me he was proud of me for going back to school. He is 16 years old and I would like to set a good example for him at this crucial time in his life.”
I feel a little guilty for bringing my son into it but I do feel proud that I have an opportunity to do this and felt especially proud in the moment he said that to me. I used to have to sit by my son while he was doing his homework and had to guide him through almost every detail but now when I get home from work, he’s already immersed in his studies and he’s excited to show me his progress.
I realize that this is the single most important reason for me to be doing this. None of the other stuff matters. None of it.
Anyway, I applied for the scholarship on Friday and got a letter emailed to me on Monday telling me that I had gotten it. I start school December 2nd. ❤️
Congratulations! I think it is amazing that you are doing this for yourself and for your son.

I’m so happy for you. I so wish you could find a way to stay on Twitter. You grace that place with your presence.
May I occasionally post a photograph of yours with a link to your blog? If you would prefer no link to Twitter I understand …
I always found the blogging community far more thoughtful and supportive. I’ll follow you here.

Thank you so much! ❤️ I don’t mind you doing that and I appreciate it very much. I don’t really have a problem with Twitter, I just personally seem to have less problems when I’m not on there, unfortunately.
